Oral fluid testing is generally used to identify recent drug use. The actual detection period varies depending on the substance, amount and frequency of use, individual factors, collection method, and laboratory testing procedures. Because of these variables, an exact detection period cannot be guaranteed.

Turnaround time depends on the type of oral fluid test performed and whether additional laboratory testing is required. Some screening services may provide preliminary results quickly, while laboratory-based or confirmation testing requires additional processing time.

A non-negative screening result is not automatically considered a confirmed positive result. When required, the specimen may undergo additional laboratory confirmation testing. This may increase the overall turnaround time before a final result is reported.
