DOT 5 PANEL DRUG TEST

DOT 5 PANEL DRUG TEST

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

At Palmetto Compliance & Testing, our DOT 5-Panel Drug Testing services are designed to help employers and safety-sensitive employees remain compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

A DOT drug test is a federally regulated drug screening required for employees working in safety-sensitive positions within the transportation industry. The primary purpose of DOT drug testing is to promote workplace and public safety by ensuring employees are not using illegal substances or misusing prescription medication that could impair their ability to safely perform job duties.

Who Is Required to Take DOT Drug Tests?

DOT drug testing requirements apply to employees performing safety-sensitive functions, including but not limited to:

  • Commercial Drivers

  • Pilot and Aviation Personnel

  • Railroad Conductors

  • Pipeline Workers

  • Ship Captains and Crew Members

  • Other DOT-Regulated Transportation Employees

DOT 5-Panel Drug Screen

The DOT 5-panel drug test screens for the following federally regulated substances:

  • Marijuana (THC)

  • Cocaine

  • Opiates (including morphine, codeine, and heroin)

  • Amphetamines & Methamphetamines

  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

Strict DOT Testing Procedures

All DOT drug testing is conducted under strict federal guidelines established by the Department of Transportation. These procedures are designed to ensure accuracy, integrity, and compliance throughout the testing process.

DOT testing procedures include:

  • Professional specimen collection procedures (typically urine collection)

  • Strict chain-of-custody documentation to protect sample integrity

  • Laboratory testing performed by certified laboratories

  • Review of results by a qualified Medical Review Officer (MRO)

  • Secure and confidential handling of all testing information

Type of DOT Drug Testing

DOT drug testing programs may include several testing situations, such as:

  • Pre-Employment Testing - Required before performing safety-sensitive job duties

  • Random Drug Testing - Unannounced testing conducted throughout the year

  • Post-Accident Testing - Required following certain workplace accidents or incidents

  • Reasonable Suspicion Testing - Conducted when trained supervisors observe signs or behaviors suggesting possible drug use

  • Return-to-Duty Testing - Required after a previous DOT violation before returning to safety-sensitive duties

  • Follow-Up Testing - Ongoing testing as part of a return-to-duty program

Consequences of Positive Results

Employees who test positive or refuse a DOT drug test are immediately removed from performing safety-sensitive job functions. Before returning to duty, individuals must complete the federally required return-to-duty process, which may include evaluation by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), recommended treatment or education, a negative return-to-duty test result, and follow-up testing requirements.

At Palmetto Compliance & Testing, we are committed to providing professional, accurate, and compliant DOT drug testing services to help employers maintain safe workplaces and meet federal transportation regulations.
